Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described his most recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump as their most productive yet, highlighting discussions on air defense. Zelenskyy shared his positive assessment in his nightly video address, stating, “Regarding the conversation with the president of the United States, which took place a day earlier, it was probably the best conversation we have had during this whole time, the most productive.”
Key Discussions and U.S. Support
As reported by Kyiv Independent, the central point of their conversation was air defense issues, with Zelenskyy expressing gratitude for the U.S.’s readiness to assist. He specifically emphasized the Patriot missile system as crucial for defending against ballistic threats, saying it “is precisely the key to protection against ballistic threats.” Beyond air defense, Zelenskyy indicated that other significant topics were discussed, with follow-up meetings planned between officials from both nations.
Trump’s Perspective and Concerns
President Trump also confirmed a “good call” with Zelenskyy. He reiterated his dissatisfaction with a separate conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing disappointment over Moscow’s apparent unwillingness to pursue a ceasefire.
When questioned about the potential for providing more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, Trump acknowledged the country’s dire need for defensive capabilities. “They’re going to need them for defense… They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard,” Trump stated. This comes as Russia has escalated its air assaults on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, including a significant drone attack on the Ukrainian capital just hours after Trump’s discussion with Putin.
