Russia carried out a large overnight strike on Ukraine’s power grid as temperatures fell to –15°C, hitting key energy sites including a thermal power plant. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said nearly 300 drones and multiple ballistic and cruise missiles were used, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity in the Kyiv region.
Moscow acknowledged targeting energy facilities, while Ukrainian officials accused Russia of intentionally attacking infrastructure to deprive civilians of heat, water, and power—actions they say meet the definition of genocide. Energy companies DTEK and Ukrenergo reported widespread damage across multiple regions.
In Kharkiv, four people were killed when missiles struck a postal terminal, and a drone hit a children’s medical facility. Additional strikes damaged homes and public buildings in Odesa, injuring several people. Despite Russia’s denials, data shows it has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy network since fall 2025, disrupting supplies during the heating season.
